What’s Happening to My Body? Let’s Talk Peri-Menopause

Let’s normalize this: peri-menopause and menopause are not sudden switches—they’re transitions. Beautiful, confusing, sweaty, emotional, empowering transitions.

Peri-menopause (the 5–10 years before menopause) is when your hormones—especially estrogen and progesterone—start to fluctuate. This can begin as early as your mid-30s or as late as your mid-40s. You might notice:

  • Heavier or lighter periods (or both!)

  • Hot flashes and night sweats

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Brain fog, mood swings, and anxiety

  •  Vaginal dryness or discomfort with intimacy

  •  Changes in body composition, skin, or hair

  • Pelvic floor changes—think leakage, pressure, or prolapse sensations

Then comes menopause—officially marked after 12 months without a period. Your ovaries have stopped releasing eggs, and estrogen levels have dropped significantly. While that’s totally natural, it can impact bone density, heart health, muscle mass, and pelvic support.

So, why does this all happen?
Hormones are powerful messengers. As estrogen declines, it affects nearly every tissue in your body—from your brain to your bladder. This is why so many seemingly “unrelated” symptoms can show up all at once.

The good news? You don’t have to “just live with it.”
At Makewell Health, we support women through this transition—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our team of pelvic health physiotherapists, naturopathic doctors, psychotherapists, and movement specialists helps you:

This stage isn’t about losing who you are—it’s about learning to work with your changing body, not against it.

Did you know? Women lose roughly 3–8% of muscle per decade after 30, and the decline speeds up around menopause. Strength training helps preserve and rebuild lean mass, supporting metabolism, joints, and daily energy. Consistent resistance exercise is linked with improved bone density (~1–3% at spine/hip over time)—key for fracture prevention in the post-menopausal years.

That is why we have introduced our Midlife Movement series - designed just for this season of life. Gentle, guided strength and mobility sessions that honour your body’s changes while helping you feel strong again.
